Downtown Incident Leads to Assault Charge

Charmane I. Smith, aged 33, was arrested on May 12, 2025, at a well-known retail store located in the downtown area. The incident occurred when Smith allegedly assaulted a security guard, Jovan J. Castillo, at approximately 1:13 PM.

According to the police report, Smith, who appeared to be talking to herself, was asked by Castillo to leave the store. In response, Smith reportedly threw a bowl of hot noodle soup at Castillo, striking him in the face and upper chest, causing him pain. Thankfully, Castillo did not require medical attention.

Target employees present during the incident described Smith as being aggressive and loud. While one employee witnessed the assault, another observed the aftermath of the thrown soup. Smith was reportedly shouting and acting as if she was 'snapping at somebody' before the soup was thrown.

Initially, Smith claimed the bowl had slipped from her hands, a story she later changed, stating that a passerby had startled her, causing the bowl to fall. Officer Robert Williams, who conducted the initial questioning, verified Smith's identity and discovered an outstanding misdemeanor warrant against her.

Following the investigation, Smith was taken into custody, handcuffed, and later booked into King County Jail on a misdemeanor assault charge. It was noted that Smith experiences bipolar disorder and was reportedly off her medication at the time of the incident.

The incident was documented with photos showing the soup-stained undershirt of the security guard and video footage from Castillo's body-worn camera capturing the detaining of the suspect. Despite no evidence from store surveillance cameras, the provided materials support the officer's report.

Seattle Police Officer Edward Grimmer documented the arrest and subsequent investigation. The report filed with the cooperation of Target employees and an assisting police officer provides an extensive account of the event leading to the arrest of Charmane I. Smith.
