Police Chase and Arrest Following Discovery of Stolen Vehicle

Early on February 7, 2024, police patrols identified a suspicious vehicle on Pine St, shortly past 1:44 AM. Responding officers found a heavily damaged Toyota Sienna with Oregon registration plates, indicating the vehicle reportedly stolen.

Officer Hamerly discovered the unconscious driver and attempted to approach but the car began to move, abiding by traffic signals and keeping within prescribed limits. This drew suspicion that the car might have been reclaimed by its rightful owner without updating police records.

On attempting a traffic stop at University St, the driver, Evan M. Pittenger, failed to comply, proceeding onto I-5. Pittenger was identified as having a history of similar crimes. A strategic ruse to coax him from the vehicle backfired when additional patrol vehicles arrived, prompting Pittenger to hastily flee after colliding with a police car.

With significant damage to his front tire, Pittenger nevertheless managed to drive off, resulting in no high-speed pursuit due to safety protocols. The vehicle was later intercepted by East Precinct officers in the vicinity of E Lynn St and Yale Ave E, leading to the temporary detention of Laura Pittenger, the passenger.

Officers searched the vehicle, uncovering several items of interest, including electronics and tools suspected to be stolen, along with drug paraphernalia posing health risks for further inspection. Despite efforts, Evan Pittenger evaded arrest on foot, with a warrant issued for his capture.

The investigation remains active, with law enforcement agencies coordinating to apprehend the suspect and process the recovered vehicle and items. Authorities urge witnesses or those with information to come forward to assist in this ongoing case.
