Seattle Man Charged with Shoplifting at Amazon Go Store

A Seattle man identified as Marquis Terrell Wilcox is facing misdemeanor theft charges following an incident at an Amazon Go store, where he is alleged to have shoplifted two cases of Modelo beer.

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) report indicates the theft occurred on July 30, 2024, at the Amazon Go location on 2301 S Jackson ST. The incident report, number 2024-217867, was filed by Detective Zsolt Dornay, who confirmed the suspect's identification on August 22, 2024. The case has since been forwarded to the Seattle City Law Department for prosecution.

According to Nick Mason, a Loss Prevention Specialist at the store, Wilcox was recognized as a repeat offender frequently seen wearing pajama pants with Santa Claus designs. On the day of the incident, Mason observed Wilcox in the beer aisle and approached to enforce a trespass order, as Wilcox was already known to be banned from the store.

Mason reported that Wilcox had multiple items in his cart, including Tide Pods and crackers, but he ultimately left the store with only the two cases of Modelo beer. Mason informed the SPD of the theft after Wilcox left the store without paying for the beer, which was scanned out as stolen. Despite video evidence being retained by the store, the beer remains unrecovered.

The City Attorney's office is proceeding with charges, and the case will serve as a test of the city's ongoing efforts to curb retail theft in Seattle.
